As the leadoff hitter for the Glendale College Softball Team, Mya Chacon won the chess match between batter, pitcher and defense more often than not. She could slap hit all day if she was getting outside pitches to hit or hit the ball on the ground or drive it and let her speed help her get on base for GCC.
That mentality worked wonders for Chacon and the team as the Lady Vaqueros were knocking on the door to making the playoffs last spring and the exuberant sophomore led the WSC in hitting at .482 which was fourth in the state and also led the conference in on-base percentage at .570 and led the state in outfield assists with 20.
And that effort and her accomplishments led her to sign a letter of intent recently to play softball at Regis University in Colorado.
"Mya's two years here at GCC were some of the most memorable in recent memory. Her accomplishments on and off the field had an impact on our program that will be difficult to duplicate," said Head Softball Coach Sal Pizzo. "Our time with her and her family will be treasured, and we will miss her. I expect nothing but great things from her in the future, as she moves on to the next level."
That next level move will include transferring to Regis University where she will continue to work towards her academic goal of being a high school math teacher after leaving GCC with a 3.5 GPA. She also takes with her numerous accomplishments including First Team All-WSC and All Southern California Honors as well as a spot on the All-Academic Team.
"My experience at GCC was truly memorable. I was given the opportunity of great education, athletic resources, and coaching,'' she said. "I will never forget some of the teammates I played with and the amazing staff I met."
