The postseason run for Glendale College continued to gain momentum on April 14, as the Vaqueros delivered a statement victory over Western State Conference rival Bakersfield College, earning a 5-0 win in dominant fashion.
Coming into the match, the storyline was clear—Bakersfield had taken both regular-season meetings, leaving Glendale with something to prove. And prove it they did. After entering the playoffs as the No. 7 seed, the Vaqueros have flipped the script, now knocking off two higher-seeded opponents in back-to-back rounds.
Glendale set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches. The duo of David Tinajero and Lance Morgan battled to an 8-6 win at No. 1, while Vartan Tolmoyan and Patrick Pickering edged out a tight tiebreak victory at No. 2, 9-8 (7-4). Hayden Pike and Christian Camarillo capped the sweep with a strong 8-4 performance at No. 3 . That early 3-0 advantage gave the Vaqueros full control heading into singles play.
In singles, Glendale wasted no time closing the door. Tolmoyan was nearly flawless at No. 2, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory, while Sean Coffey dominated at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-1 win . With momentum firmly on their side, the remaining matches were all trending Glendale's way before being halted, securing the shutout team victory.
The win marks another major step in an already impressive postseason journey. Just a week earlier, the Vaqueros stunned No. 2 seed Riverside on April 7, rallying into the second round and setting up the rematch with Bakersfield—this time with a completely different outcome.
Now, Glendale turns its attention to the biggest challenge yet. The Vaqueros will travel to face No. 1 seed Irvine Valley College on Saturday, April 18. With a berth in the state championship on the line, Glendale will look to continue its underdog run. The winner will advance to face the top team from Northern California for the state title.
From a No. 7 seed to one win away from the championship stage, the Vaqueros are proving that postseason tennis is all about momentum—and right now, Glendale College has plenty of it
