Wilmer Bonilla paces Glendale with two goals in a 4-2 win over Moorpark; Vaqs now 8-5-1 heading into conference play
To connect on a 42-yard goal is nothing short of amazing. The timing has to be right as well as the elements and all of those things were in place Friday at Sartoris Field for Wilmer Bonilla's effort in the second half at the 32:21 mark that gave the Vaqueros a 3-1 lead on the way to a 4-2 win over visiting Moorpark.
Now 8-5-1 with the win, the Vaqs could have a realistic shot at making the playoffs heading into their WSC conference opener Tuesday Oct. 15 at Antelope Valley at 5 pm. "I'm hopeful that we are hitting our stride at the right time,'' said GCC Head Coach Laura Matsumoto. " And that all the work we have done and that we need to continue to do will pay off in 90 minutes of solid play from our team every time we take the field over the next eight games.''
Glendale jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal by Andrew Senane assisted by Kai Saito and increased that to 2-0 on Bonilla's first goal of the game at the 42 minute mark. Bonilla's second goal of the game made it 3-1 and it was 4-1 late in the second half on a header by Wataru Okamoto on a pass by Hung-Jui "Tim" Chiu. Goalie Tito Tejada paced the defensive effort with seven saves.
"Believe it or not I practice those long distance shots and I was thrilled to see it go in,'' said Bonilla after the game. "We are in a good place now as a team but we still have more work to do to get better. That long goal was for my mom in case she didn't see it.''
