Despite several standout performances and a valiant effort on both sides of the ball, the Glendale College Vaqueros fell short Thursday night in a tough 38-21 loss to San Bernardino Valley. The setback drops Glendale to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while San Bernardino improved to 5-2 (2-0).
The Vaqueros showed fight throughout, led by quarterback Christian Breazeale, who threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-36 passing. His most explosive connection came in the third quarter when he found Zamondre Merriweather on a perfectly placed 34-yard touchdown strike, tying the game at 14-14. Merriweather finished the night with 4 receptions for 57 yards and a score, continuing to be a reliable deep threat.
Earlier, Breazeale had sparked the Vaqueros' offense with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Damien Navarro, who found a seam in the defense to put Glendale on the board before halftime. Caiou Chatman led all Glendale receivers in catches with 5 receptions for 65 yards, while Luke Hyan added 6 catches for 45 yards, giving the offense consistent short-yardage options.
On the ground, Noah Gomez made the most of his opportunity, punching in a 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to keep Glendale within striking distance. The Vaqueros' run game struggled overall, posting just 29 net rushing yards, but Gomez's burst and finish gave the home crowd something to cheer about.
Glendale's defense worked relentlessly to contain a versatile SBVC offense that posted 471 total yards. Linebacker Nathaniel Deleon led the defensive unit with 7 solo tackles and a tackle for loss, while Mark Edwards Jr., Rohan Green, and Colin Fahrberger each contributed 6 or more tackles and multiple stops behind the line. Jose Ruiz and Reece Miller also made key tackles for loss, helping Glendale slow SBVC's rushing attack in critical moments.
Although the Vaqueros trailed most of the game, they remained competitive deep into the second half. However, SBVC pulled away in the final quarter behind explosive plays, including a back-breaking 77-yard touchdown pass to cap the scoring.
Though the loss stings, the Vaqueros demonstrated grit and flashes of explosive potential. With key playmakers stepping up and the defense showing resilience, Glendale will look to regroup as they prepare for their next conference challenge.
