The Glendale Community College Vaqueros dropped a hard-fought 6-4 decision on the road Tuesday afternoon, as an early surge from Santa Ana proved to be the difference.
Glendale (10-3) found itself in an early hole after Santa Ana plated two runs in the first and three more in the second. Starter John Trainor (2-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) over two innings of work. Despite the early deficit, the Vaqueros' bullpen kept the game within reach. Tristan Purfoy delivered 2.1 scoreless innings, and Cris Banuelos was dominant late, striking out five over three shutout frames to give Glendale a chance to rally.
The Vaqueros responded in the fourth and fifth innings. Jaquez Noah provided a spark with a home run and finished with an RBI and a run scored. Andrew Garcia doubled and drove in a run, while David Lozano added a double of his own as part of a one-hit, one-run effort. Adonis Jenkins contributed an RBI, and Mike Bang lifted a sacrifice fly to help Glendale even the score at 4-4 midway through the contest.
However, Santa Ana pushed across what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth. Glendale totaled six hits on the day, including doubles from Garcia, Lozano, Jenkins, and Miguel Villegas, but couldn't capitalize late. The Vaqueros also worked five walks but struck out 10 times and left six runners on base.
Defensively, Glendale committed one error, while the bullpen combined for six shutout innings after the early damage.
Despite the loss, the Vaqueros showed resilience battling back on the road and will look to bounce back in their next outing.
