2015 GCC Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees
1977 Football - Outstanding Team
The 1977 Football team won the first Western State Conference title in the Jim Sartoris /John Cicuto era of coaching. They were 8-3 that season and 6-1 to take the WSC title but fell to Saddleback in the Mission Bowl to end the season. Six players and coaches from that team have been inducted into the GCC Hall of Fame but that team will be most remembered for the support they have provided to Glendale College.
Brian Beauchemin - Outstanding Coach
Brian Beauchemin was the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Glendale College for 35 years from 1979-2014 and amassed 592 victories to rank No. 3 in the state all-time. His teams advanced to the postseason 24 times with two of those teams reaching the elite eight. Beauchemin had a great rapport with his players on and off the court and he is proud of the fact that man of his players transferred to four-years schools after playing at Glendale
Tammy Panich - Outstanding Athletic Achievement
Tammy Panich won the 2010 state championship as a golfer on the Glendale College women's team, the first player to earn that distinction in school history. She was also an All-American for the Lady Vaqs that year, won the WSC title and finished second in the Southern California Regionals.
Joe Puglia - Meritorious Service
For almost 40 years, Dr. Joe Puglia was a mentor, friend and confidant for thousands of students as a counselor at Glendale College. He worked as the counselor for student-athletes from 1976-2001 and he remains close to many of those athletes to this day. His work with the student government at GCC was unprecedented, as he led them as their mentor in the classroom and their guide in outdoor excursions that remain a highlight for many who experienced them.
Freddy Sanchez - Pillar of Achievement
Freddy Sanchez is considered one of the best players to ever wear a Vaquero baseball uniform. He played for Glendale in 1997-88and led the Vaqs to a share of the 1998 WSC title and was named the conference MVP. Sanchez went on to a have a tremendous career in the Major Leagues with the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants, winning the National League batting title in 2006 with Pittsburgh, a World Series Championship with the Giants in 2010 and playing in three All-star games in 2006, 2007 and 2009.
Victor Trujillo - Outstanding Athletic Achievement
An All-American and conference MVP in 1979, Trujillo helped Glendale win its first state championship in men's soccer that season. Trujillo also played football for Glendale in1979 as the place kicker and led the team in kick scoring. He is a commander in the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and is celebrating his 30th year in the department.
