2003 GCC Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees

 

1977 Women's Cross Country Team - Outstanding Team

The 1977 Women's Cross Country team went undefeated that season winning 10 meets, including the Western State Conference Finals, the Southern California championship and the state championship. They were the first, and to this day the only women's team in Glendale College history to win a state championship.

Frank Wykoff - Outstanding Athletic Achievement

In 1929, just two years after Glendale Junior College was extablished, Frank Wykoff put the school on the map in terms of athletics by tying the world record four separate times in the 100-meter dash, and by winning the National Junior College Championship in that event. In 1930, while a student at USC, Wykoff cemented his reputation as the world's fastest human when he set the world record of 9.4, a time established without the use of starting blocks, and a mark that lasted for 17 years. He also won gold medals in the 1928, 1932 ^ 1936 Olympic Games as part of the 4x100 Meter Relay teams.

Damon Bame - Outstanding Athletic Achievement

Pound for pound, Bame might be one of the best defensive players ever to wear a Vaquero uniform. He was a tw0-time All-American at Glendale College in 1960*61 and tw0-time All -American at USC in 1962-63. In 1962 he led the Trojan defense to a Rose Bowl Victory and the National Championship.

Ed Tucker - Outstanding Coach

At Glendale College from 1954 to 1967, Ed Tucker led the Vaqueros to Eight Western State Conferene championship and the greatest prize of all, the first state championship in the school history in 1959. Throught his career at Glendale College, the United States Coast Guard Academy and Grossmont College, Tucker compiled a mind-boggling record of 438 meets won and just 39 losses.

Virginia Manker - Meritorious Service

The efforts Virginia Manker made to involve young women in athletics at Glendale Junior College in the 1960's and 1970's can never be emphasized enough. Along with other women's athletic coaches of the era, she played a fundamental rol in the formation of the first organized leagues for women's athletic competition. Manker eventually became Women's Athletic Director at GCC, where she continued to inspire high level of competition, sportsmanship and character building until her retirement in 1982.

Andy Reid - Pillar of Achievement

Andy Reid played football at Glendale Community College from 1976-77 and was All-WSC selection. He was named the NFL head Coach of the Year in 2002 in his 4th year with the Philadelphia Eagles and has led the Eagles to the NFC Championship game in 2001 and 2002.
