2002 GCC Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees

 

1985 Football Team - Outstanding Team

The 1985 football team, under Head Coach Jim Sartoris won the Western State Conference Title and the Potato Bowl Championship. They ranked No.5 in the nation with a 10-1 record.

Carl Boldt - Outstanding Athletic Achievement

Carl was an All=Western State Conference Player in 1951-52 and 1952-53 at Glendale as well as All-American as a sophomore. He was a starter (wearing #19) on the 1956 USF team that went undefeated and won the NCAA title that year. He was drafted in the NBA by the Detroit Pistons in 1957. He worked several years in the NBA and ABA as a scout. He also coached local high school basketball.

Donna Mayhew - Outstanding Athletic Achievement

Donna captured the Glendale Community College javelin throw record in 1980 wih a throw of 167'6". In 1980 she become the State Champion. Donna also competed for the University of Arizona team. Other accomplishments inclufe competing in the 1988 and 1982 Olympics.

Chuck Gibson - Outstanding Coach

Chuck is a former professor and long time men's tennis coach. He mentored several championship-caliber players and still competes in senior tennis events.

J. Walter Smith - Meritorious Service

Walt Smith was the Dean of Student Activities at Glendale Community College for 37 years until he retired in 1992. He coached track from 1947 until 1954 and remains a supporter of athletics.

Cathy Ferguson - Pillar of Achievement

Cathy was named Women's Athlete of the Year in 1967-68. She won 2 gold medals in swimming at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. She was inducted into the L.A. Athletic Clubs Hall of Fame. Currently Cathy is an executive with AYSO soccer.
