RECENT GLENDALE COLLEGE TRANSFERS

 

2018

 

Felix Rubi- University of California, Los Angeles (Academic Scholarship)

Felix Rubi was the closer for the WSC East Champion Vaqueros in 2018 before an injury ended his season. He was recognized as an All-WSC East first team selection as a relief pitcher in 10 appearances and one start, had a 0.95 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit just .177. He struck out 24 in 19 innings and allowed just two runs and two walks. The John F. Kennedy High School graduate earned a 3.6 GPA while at Glendale College the past three years and will be majoring in Geography at UCLA.

   

Troy Viola- San Jose State University (Academic and Athletic Scholarship)

An outstanding player for the Vaqs in 2018 at the plate and on the field, Troy Viola (Bend, OR) put up impressive numbers in earning All-WSC First Team honors as well as All-WSC East Gold Glove recognition at third base. He led the team with 90 total bases to go with nine homers, 38 RBI, scored 33 runs and had 56 hits and seven doubles with a .306 batting average.

   

Konner Piotto- Wright State University (Academic and Athletic Scholarship)

Konner Piotto (Vancouver, BC) made significant contributions to the Vaqs title run. Konner played several games with a broken bone in his receiving hand, but he found a way to contribute daily. In 2018, Konner was named first team All-WSC East Catcher. He was one of the team leaders in batting, hitting .344 and scored 14 runs and had a .985 fielding percentage.

 

   

Jake Selco- Hawaii-Pacific University (Academic and Athletic Scholarship)

Jake Selco earned All-WSC East Gold Glove honors for his play at first base as well as second team All-WSC. He hit .281 in 34 games and had 25 hits, scored 22 runs and contributed timely hitting all season with 24 RBI, eight doubles and three homers. He had a .472 slugging percentage. Jake tripled his SB totals at GCC from his senior year at El Camino Real HS.

 

  Jacob Gribbin- Lewis and Clark State College (Academic and Athletic Scholarship)

One of the top contributors for GCC in 2018, Jacob Gribbin led the Vaqs with a .384 batting average in 41 starts and led the team with 16 doubles and 25 stolen bases. The Hawaiian native was second on the team with 56 hits. Gribbin scored 42 runs and collected 34 RBI. He was a tremendous outfielder with just two errors and was named first team All-WSC East as well as the All Southern California Team in 2018.

 

 

Grant Mona- University of Pacific (Academic and Athletic Scholarship)

A two year starter for the Vaqs, Mona was a mainstay in the infield as he started 40 of the 43 games in 2018. He led the team in assists with 120 against just seven errors and hits .275 and had 41 hits and scored 41 runs. He was named All-WSC East Honorable Mention and was a WSC Gold Glove recipient in 2017. Grant is a Verdugo Hills HS graduate, that redshirted his first year at GCC, the long-term decision paid off as he will be taking his talents to Stockton, CA.

 

 

Jason Whaley- Cal State University, Northridge (Academic Scholarship)

Jason Whaley (John Burroughs HS) was third on the pitching staff with 53 innings pitched and had several strong starts for the Vaqueros in his two years at GCC. He had 13 appearances in 2018, 11 starts and had a 5.23 ERA with opponents hitting .270 against him.

   

Tony LaPorte- Cal State University, Northridge

Despite sharing the catching duties, sophomore catcher Tony LaPorte from Grnada Hills High earned All-WSC East Honorable Mention in 2018. He hit .278 in 25 games with 25 hits, scored 15 runs and had 15 RBI. He had a .989 field percentage and had just two errors last season.

 

 

Tyree Burns- The University of Rhode Island

East Coast native Tyree Burns excelled as a pinch runner for the Vaqs in 2018 as he scored 10 runs in just 19 plate appearances and also stole five bases. He had five hits and three RBI.  Tyree made 10 put outs with no errors in the field.

   

Chris Davidson- Cal State University, Northridge

The All-Southern California selection, Chris Davidson (Village Christian HS) was the mainstay for the Glendale pitching staff in 2018 as he had a 7-1 record in 17 appearances with 11 starts with an ERA of 2.68. He led the staff with 84 innings pitched with 64 strikeouts and was named All-WSC East First Team as a starting pitcher. In the Southern California Regional Championship against Pasadena on May 5, Davidson pitched the Vaqs to a complete game win in game No. 2 and then returned to pitch the ninth inning in the game three come from behind win.

 

John Vergara- UC Irvine (Academic and Athletic Scholarship)

Starting pitcher John Vergara helped the 2017 Vaqueros to a 33-10 overall record and 16-4 WSC East record. His record that season was 5-1 in nine starts in 41.2 innings with a 3.02 ERA.  The John Marshall HS graduate rounded out a superb class of transfers for the GCC Baseball Program which has over an 85% transfer rate to four-year institutions since 2008.
